Outline There are 67 children currently enrolled at the Learning Centre and on average, we have 50 children attending the centre daily. The Learning Centre is similar to a Homework Centre however we call it a Learning Centre because we try to offer the children extra support in Curriculum areas that they may need. The children that attend can either be picked up by the van that we provide and brought to the centre or else they find their own way here. The van will also take students home after the centre has finished for the day. Most of these children attend the local schools in Wainuiomata however, there are one or two students who attend the Learning Centre who go to school in Lower Hutt. We have a
small team of people who work with the children.
The first priority is to complete the homework that has been given for
the week by the schools. Once this
is completed, the students are able to complete worksheets that are suitable for
their year group. The
year 1 and 2’s that attend the Learning Centre work in a separate room from
the other students. There is a
group that has been formed and that changes each term so that specific children
can have more one to one support. This
group is made up of mainly year 4 to 6 students.
The other students work in another room where support is given. During
the year, the children are required to complete different tests such as the
Ministry of Education’s Asttle
Test, a spelling test and a basic facts test.
This information is recorded and if there are any areas that we feel we
need to work on more with the students once these test results have been
completed, then this will be done throughout the term.
This has been a very useful practice as it allows us to talk with both
the parents of the students and the teachers of the students about the learning
needs of the students and how best we can assist that child’s learning whilst
here at the Learning Centre. These results
are given to the parents via a progress report every two terms. As
well as support academically, we also provide support within Sports.
Within our facilities, there is a gymnasium that the students are able to
use under adult supervision. Some
students are able to use the weight machines and the other students work on
skill based activities and play games in the aerobics room.
Two of the support team that work in the centre also attend the local
schools during the week at lunchtimes to take sport with the students.
This is a proven to be very successful as it has allowed us to maintain a
positive relationship with the schools and the ongoing relationship with the
students. Back to Top |
